Karen Silkwood arbeitet wie ihr Freund Drew Stephens und ihre Freundin Dolly Peliker in der Plutonium-Fabrik "Kerr-McGee" in Cimarron, Oklahoma. Tagtäglich werden sie nach der Arbeit auf Strahlenbelastung kontolliert. Als eines Tages der Zeiger bei Karen ausschlägt, glaubt man zuerst an einen technischen Fehler. Nach und nach stellt sich allerdings heraus, dass der Störfall am Wochenende wohl doch nicht so harmlos war, wie man glauben machen wollte. Da Karen überzeugte Gewerkschafterin ist, geht sie der Sache nach und bittet um Aufklärung. Allerdings stößt sie auf erbitterten Widerstand von Seiten der Fabrikleitung. Sie hat nur noch eine Chance, den Weg an die Öffentlichkeit...
